Simplify The Process of Moving House with These Unpacking Tips
Posted on 06/12/2013
It is an odd, but true, fact that when we are so occupied with planning every last detail of our house removal, we hardly think of what comes “after”. Most people focus on everything that leads up to the move and the process of moving into the new house but few people make an actual action plan for things they have to do after they have moved into the new house.
Instead of letting things come as they may, you should have a defined list of things to do once you move in so that the transition from the old house to the new one is an easy one. After all, the process of moving house isn’t just about getting your things packed and transported to the new residence, it is also about setting up a life in the new house. In this article, we discuss some wonderful unpacking tips that will help you complete a successful move!
Hopefully, you’ve followed popular packing advice and put together a separate box of essential items such as toiletries, clothes, some packed foods, medicines, keys, phone chargers etc. These are the items you just can’t do without on a day-to-day basis and ideally this is the first box/ bag you should unpack. Get these items out and put them in an easily accessible spot so that you have the necessary stuff within reach even as you take your time with the rest of it.
The first major thing to do is arrange all the furniture. Except for the really small pieces, most furniture will not be packed so much so as it will be “wrapped”. Get all the furniture out, clean it, and place it around the house. Also put in upholstery, bedding materials, mattresses, pillows and other such supplementary parts. This way you’ll have place to sit, rest and sleep and the interiors of the house will start taking shape.
The next step should be to unpack the appliances and electronics. Things like the refrigerator, microwave oven, cooking stove, clothes irons, washing machines etc. need to be up and running as soon as possible. These appliances are indispensable to the functioning of a running household and the sooner you get them unpacked and plugged in, the sooner you can resume a regular routine.
When it comes to unpacking everything else, you should move room-by-room. For this, you need to have packed everything in cartons according to rooms. Labelling each box to indicate which room the items inside it belong to is a great way to make unpacking an easier task.
For starters, you should begin with unpacking the most essential rooms of the house: the kitchen and the bathroom. No house can be in proper running condition without these two parts of the house being fully functional. If you have two or more bathrooms, don’t start unpacking all the items belonging to them, just focus on getting one bathroom fully ready to be used properly. The kitchen, of course, needs to be set up properly as quickly as possible. You will want to have hot, home cooked meals instead of spending on eating out or ordering in.
If you’ve labelled all your boxes properly, you’ll know where everything is. Once the aforementioned steps have been completed, begin unpacking things that can be easily organised. In other words, you should first unpack items that can be put into cupboards, shelves and closets. This way, as you keep unpacking, you will be able to put things into proper place without creating a pile of clutter.
