Hackney is to the North-east of the City of London and close to the Tower Hamlets with Islington to the West and Haringey in the North. Over time up to the Georgian era Hackney became a rural retreat until the railway was completed in 1850 The first Tudor theatres in London where built here and the infamous Gunpowder plot was exposed not far away. Grand houses were built in Stoke Newingtona and Stamford Hill, which now provides a refuge for the large orthodox Jewish community. Around this place, famous director Alfred Hitchcock made many of his films at Gainsborough Studious in Poole Street.
Since the Second World war there has been large amounts of work and rejuvenation done in the area. Many of the Georgian and Victorian buildings have been revitalized and old disused warehouses have become apartments. The area is host to many parks and open spaces, with it being declared the greenest borough in all of central London and is a haven for cyclists. Many of the parks have obtained the prestigious Green Flag Award and Hackney Marshes contain the largest group of football pitches in all of Europe. The area just keeps getting busier and brighter and is one of the sites of the 2012 Summer Olympic games.
